Online MBBS admission from 2011 in Bangladesh

The government has decided to launch online application for admission to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from next year.

Health minister A F M Ruhal Haque told reporters on Friday that the MBBS admission tests had been administered properly after visiting admission test centres at Dhaka University and Eden Women's University College.

On Friday, a combined MBBS admission test for both private and public medical colleges was held for the first time to ensure the minimum standard of physicians. The one hour test, which started at 10.00am, was held in 20 centres in 15 districts.

Over 42,000 candidates competed for 5710 seats. The top 2,360 candidates will be admitted to the 18 public medical colleges while the remaining 3,350 will go to 43 private medical colleges.

A total of 20 MBBS seats are reserved for indigenous students, 80 for foreign students and 114 seats for children of freedom fighters.

Among the public medical colleges, 50 students will be admitted to Jessore Medical College for the first time.

The health minister said that earlier, only children of the rich, could secure admission to private medical colleges without minimum educational qualification.

"This year for the first time, we have taken the admission tests both for MBBS and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) for public and private institutions jointly, to ensure a minimum standard of the doctors."
